Municipal sign by-laws regulate all aspects of real estate signs and are intended to preserve and protect the appearance and safety of communities. For REALTORS®, this means the placement and duration of open house directional signs and for sale/lease signs are governed by municipal sign by-laws. Compliance is important to demonstrate the high level of professionalism of REALTORS® and help ensure we don't invite further regulation by government.
Sign by-laws differ from one municipality to the next in Halton Region. TREB encourages Members to review the sign by-laws in Halton Region to ensure compliance. Click here to review the municipal sign by-laws.
Be aware that regional roadways (for example, Guelph Line, James Snow Parkway and Derry Road) are governed by the Region and have different regulations. In Halton Region, no person shall erect, place, maintain or display a sign, placard or written notice within the right-of-way of any regional road, except as exempted by section 4 of this by-law. By-law highlights from Halton Region:
- Oakville – For sale/lease signs must be removed within fourteen (14) days after the property is no longer for sale/lease.
- Milton – For sale/lease sign may not exceed 1.1 sq.m. and only A-frame open house signs are permitted.
- Halton Hills – Only one (1) for sale/lease sign is permitted per property.
